Artillery Demonstrations

Ongoing Opportunities

  • Saturday, May 4 and Sunday, May 5 at 11:00 AM, 1:00 PM, and 3:00 PM
The Heart of the Civil War Heritage Area’s (HCWHA) 2024 Porch Program Series continues with the roar of cannon fire as the South Mountain Artillery Detachment once again visits the Newcomer House. This was the same site where Captain John Tidball's flying artillery charged up a hill to high ground during the 1862 Battle of Antietam. Talk and firings will happen at 11 AM, 1 PM, and 3 PM on Saturday, May 4 and Sunday, May 5.

As a bonus to the presentations on Sunday, May 5, an interpretive hike, led by former National Park Ranger Matthew Penrod, will follow each firing session. The hike on the Tidball Trail leads to the exact spot occupied by Captain Tidball's artillery during the Battle of Antietam. This is an up-and-back hike of approximately 0.6 miles on an 8-10 degree incline of uneven terrain. It will last approximately 45 minutes.

This event is free to the public.
