Heart of the Civil War Heritage Area

Welcome to the Heart of the Civil War Heritage Area. Comprised of portions of Carroll, Frederick and Washington Counties, the Heart of the Civil War is a recognized, and soon to be certified, heritage area of the Maryland Heritage Areas Program.

The story of the Civil War, its causes, battles, heroes and villains…its very meaning can be told nowhere better than in this part of Maryland. This site is in development to become the gateway to the Heart of the Civil War, from visitor services to battlefields and museums. In the meantime, you may learn more about plans for the Heart of the Civil War Heritage Area by reviewing the Management Plan (6.8 MB) , provided here as a pdf file.
