Civil War and Reconstruction Specialist from the Manuscript Division of the Library of Congress, Michelle A. Krowl, discusses the extraordinary life of Elizabeth Keckly. Born enslaved in Virginia, Keckly managed to purchase her own freedom and eventually become Mary Todd Lincoln’s seamstress.
