Dr. Emilie Amt, Hildegarde Pilgram Professor of History at Hood College, will be giving a talk titled "Remembering Africa in Western Maryland, 1750 - 1865." In western Maryland before the Civil War, enslaved Africans and their descendants kept alive memories of Africa in their oral tradition, written narrative, and cultural practice. Focusing on local black narratives, this talk will explore how a people who had been taken to the other side of the world remembered a distant homeland and their ancestors.
