6:30 - 9:30 pm. The battle of Gettysburg opened on July 1, 1863 as the forces of Robert E. Lee moved to the crossroads town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, and collided with the Union cavalry under John Buford. Analyze the day from the Confederate point of view. Assess if Southerners wanted or expected to fight a big battle at Gettysburg and how well they did. Judge the control Robert E. Lee had over the spreading fighting.
