Eighth Annual Washington County Museum Ramble

Description:

The museum ramble is a self guided tour of 19 museums and historic sites throughout Washington County. Maps and directions to participating sites will be available at the Visitor Welcome Center in downtown Hagerstown. Grab a museum ramble passport at any of the participating sites and after you're done "rambling," drop it off at a museum for a chance to win a basket full of goodies.

Description:

The Pry House Field Hospital Museum at Antietam National Battlefield opens its 2011 season as one of the stops on the Washington County, MD Historic Sites Ramble. The PHFHM consists of an exhibit on the development of the Union Army's field hospital system, under the direction of Dr. Jonathan Letterman, just before the Battle of Antietam. 11am-5pm

Description:

Interactive family activities recall the burning of the Courthouse on May 8, 1861. See the "Old Lady" hand pumper that helped to extinguish the fire, meet a 19th century Independent Hose man, and at 3pm join the bucket brigade in a recreation of the extinguishing of the courthouse blaze. Sponsored by the Frederick County Fire and Rescue Museum. 1-5pm

Civil War Living History Reenactment
Dates:

May 7 and 8

Description:

Witness Living History in the remaking as various regiments occupy the grounds surrounding the family farmhouse. Guests may visit the camps. Artisans will demonstrate skills from the 1800s. Learning lectures are scheduled in the Grier Room. Schoolhouse interpretations and children's drilling demonstrations will take place. The Friends of the President Street Station will bring their traveling museum exhibit and there will be plenty of vendors & food available. Saturday, May 7, open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, May 8, open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

National Museum of Civil War Medicine: First Saturday Hours

Description:

The National Museum of Civil War Medicine participates as one of about 80 shops, galleries and historic venues, celebrating our downtown historic district. The full museum is open, its usual hours from 11am-5pm at the usual admittance rates. From 5pm until 9pm the museum's first floor galleries are open to the public for free.

B&O Railroad During the Civil War

Description:

Noon-1pm. $1 for HSCC members; $4 for non-members. Bring a lunch, dessert and beverages provided. During the Civil War, the Baltimore & Ohio (B&O) Railroad's unique geographic location and service to key cities such as Baltimore and Washington made control of the railroad's operation critical to the outcome of the war. David Shackelford, Chief Curator of the B&O Railroad Museum, examines key events impacting the railroad and shows how the B&O was affected by both sides during the war.

Civil War Talk - The Sanitary Commission and their Fairs

May’s lecture, will celebrate National Military Appreciation Month with a Talk on the Sanitary Commission and their fairs that raised money to support the troops during the American Civil War. Learn your fate through a reproduced 19th century fortune telling booth, similar to the ones found at one of the Fairs. 11am-noon

Garden Party

Description:

Join the staff at the Pry House for a garden party to prepare the 19th century-style kitchen and medical garden. Bring your gardening tools and prepare to dig in! Learn about gardening techniques, heirloom vegetables and recipes of the Civil War era and enjoy traditional 19th century refreshments. 9am-3pm
